Chapter 8 Exercises Consulting Private Instruction
If you’ve had previous golf lessons and nothing helps, try my Y Shape method. It really works! And if you’ve never played golf, the Y Shape gives you the correct swing perception from the start.

Begin with a simple idea: The setup position of the arms and club, which forms The Y Shape, doesn’t change during the swing. That’s all. Just maintain The Y Shape.

Capture the idea, perform the exercises, acquire the feel, play better golf.

Dear Phil,

I like your book and I like your videos.  As a seven handicapper who’s always trying to improve, I find your material very refreshing.  My hobby is studying the golf swing and I have many books on the topic (both old and new).  I have been struggling for some time with consistency and so I was interested when I first came across one of your videos.  After having looked at your videos a number of times and reading your book, I am genuinely excited. I have begun implementing some of your recommendations and am noticing improvement in the quality of my ball striking straight away.

The idea of having the club head travel around the body rather than down the target line has been a real help to me.  I am still working on this - especially the follow through, but I like the crispness of the shot.  I haven’t found the stroke as energy sapping either.  My drives and long irons especially are much straighter and produce a much nicer sound off the clubface.  I still pull occasionally and am working on not flipping.  This is where I need to spend some time.

I am a primary school teacher in Australia who runs a junior golf program with our local pro and I am confident I will be able to be a little more helpful to my students now in explaining the golf swing.

I think that what your Y shape idea does is produce a very good big picture of the swing.  A lot of golf instruction involves series of smaller tips which you are meant to put together without ever producing an overall picture.  I know you have smaller tips too, but these link in nicely with the overall theme.

I can genuinely say that what I have tried so far from your method has produced the quickest improvement I have ever had.  I look forward to getting my handicap down to a record low.

Best Wishes,

R W

Phil,
Thanks again. Got a chance to try your methods at the range yesterday.
Wow!!
I've been struggling for 2+ years trying to "find" it. I was a 2. I
tried to build a more reliable swing after a back nine collapse after
being 4 under through six in the final round of my club championship 2
years ago. 2 years later (and several methods tried) I'm a 10 (and
seriously considering tennis!!)
It didn't take me but 5 balls yesterday to know I "found" the method
I'll be using from now on. Thanks for reviving my game.

Dear Phil,

Thanks for taking the time to write back with words of wisdom for my golf game. After working on my swing for over a year, even with private instruction, I can now say that I have advanced more in two weeks following your Y method than in months of practicing, reading every golf magazine and buying all kinds of training aids.

I've finally got the "perception vs reality". What really clicked on me was your video of "late release" where you advise to imagine hitting a ball with the butt of the club. I have a yoga ball that I use in between my arms to practice the Y 1/2 drills. As soon I had the visual of hitting this ball just prior to release, I could start hitting the ball in a way I still can't believe. For me that was like finding Hogan's secret.

You have definitely earned my business. I am looking forward to meeting you in Sarasota this winter or perhaps arranging a day of private lessons in Miami.

Please expect from me a video of my swing for your analysis accompanied with a check for one hour of your time. It will be my pleasure.

Thanks much,

Thanks I enjoyed the book.

What I really needed to get clear in my head was the swing path. Arc around and controlled by the rotation of the body, not along the target line with the arms. I am driving further and straighter. All around playing better with less effort and less stress on my body!

Thanks again!

Hi Phil,

Thanks very much for your very generous gift. I read it yesterday and will return to it again.

A little bit of background on myself.

I am a Scottish male living in the UK, I am 67 years old and suffer from osteoarthritis of the hips and spine. I absolutely love my golf and I have over 700 golf books and over 100 DVDs.

I have played most of my golfing life with a big pull hook, with some good hand eye coordination I have been able to keep this as a draw and played to 14 handicap.

However, when I started to get my hips problems, my draw turned into a big pull hook, or a block to the right if I tried to stop the club head from releasing. The result is my handicap has gone up to 20 and I have trouble playing to it.

In spite of having loads of lessons from many different pros, nobody told me the real reason for my problems until about 6 months ago.

I was practicing on the driving range when a young female pro, who was passing, told me I was rolling my forearms on my takeaway and that as long as I did this I would continue pull hooking for the rest of my life.

Since that day I have been trying to find a way of stopping this major fault, with no success.

I came across you videos on you tube, by accident, a couple of days ago and they seemed to offer me a solution.

I read your book yesterday and went down to the driving range with a wedge and a 7 iron.

It took me about 15 minutes to get the feel of the waist high to waist high swing before I started to hit some balls with it.

I was absolutely amazed with the results.

I was hitting the ball with the true loft of the club, where for years I have hit low pulls.

The most startling effect was from the 7 iron.

I normally carry my 7 iron about 130 yards with a full swing and it is quite low and usually going left.

With the short swing of waist high to waist high I was carrying my 7 iron 140 yards with a high, straight ball flight.

I tried a couple of full swings, but was having difficulty timing them, however I will work on this.

The most striking thing to me about your method is the completely different feel I get from the swing and a totally different sensation at impact. It now feels as though I am collecting the ball on the way through, as distinct from hitting it.

I will definitely persevere with your method as I would love to get back to playing a decent game again.

Thanks again for your book.
Cheers
